Why we’re here

In 2005, when Sir Keith Mills, as International President and CEO of London 2012, and Lord Seb Coe took their team to Singapore to bid for the 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games, they made a number of promises.

The most ambitious of these promises was that if successful, they would use the Games to ‘Inspire a Generation’.

Sported was founded in 2008 with a donation of £10 million from Sir Keith Mills as his personal commitment to deliver on this important promise and to ensure a fitting legacy was left in the UK.

His ambition was to not only inspire a generation to play sports, but to use sport as a way of inspiring disadvantaged young people to overcome their personal hurdles and fulfil their potential in life.

Changing young lives from the grassroots up

Sported now supports a network of over 3,000 small community clubs and groups across the UK, all of which are using sport to transform the lives of disadvantaged young people.

What makes our members such a powerful catalyst for positive change is that they are plugged into the needs of their local community and provide an effective channel to engage some of the most marginalised, disadvantaged and hard-to-reach young people in the UK.

The club leaders and volunteers who run these organisations are able to have a dramatic impact on young lives because they are at home in the communities where help is needed most. They have grown up on the same streets and faced the same problems. In opening their doors to their local community, they provide young people with a stability and consistency that is all too often lacking in their complex and turbulent young lives.

The only things these inspirational people sometime lack are the networks, know-how and resources to be able to sustain the work of their clubs.

It’s here where Sported makes the difference.
