North Down Boxing and Fitness Club

Promoting health, fitness and wellbeing in Bangor, County Down

North Down Boxing and Fitness Club is based in Bangor and focuses on promoting health, fitness and wellbeing within the local community through boxing. Thanks to mentor support and a grant of nearly £10,000 from Sported, the club launched ‘Boxing Smart’, a programme that increases young people’s employment opportunities through education and volunteering.

Through its Boxing Smart programme, 16 young people are being trained to achieve a Level 1 Certificate in Coaching Boxing. The trained coaches will gain valuable work experience, volunteering a minimum of three hours per week coaching other young people at North Down Boxing and Fitness Club. They will also take the lead in the club’s community outreach programme, working with up to 100 disadvantaged young people over the three year project period.

    HOW SPORTED HELPED

North Down was supported by Sported volunteer mentor, Wendy Robinson, who helped the club think about their sustainability by developing a strategic business plan and advising them on their governance.

As a direct result of Wendy’s advice and support, the club also secured a grant of £4,000 from Lloyds TSB Foundation.
