Engage Communities

Improving social cohesion in the West Midlands

Engage Communities embodies the meaning of community engagement. Engage is a Community Interest Company (CIC) that is truly committed to empowering and developing socially excluded and disadvantaged young members of the community. The group was founded by Yaser Mir in 2010, after members of the local community identified a breakdown in social cohesion and growing problems of gangs and youth violence across the West Midlands area. On a weekly basis Engage works with over 250 young people across the Stoke-on-Trent area; improving social cohesion and increasing opportunities for marginalised and vulnerable members of the community.

Engage received a £9,000 grant and volunteer mentor support from Sported to increase their knowledge of fundraising, marketing and branding strategy. As a result, the project has gone from strength-to-strength and now offers a variety of sports coaching in boxing, cricket and football. In addition, Engage now works with a variety of schools and youth clubs in the area to provide enrichment opportunities to disadvantaged and marginalised young people ages 5-17.
