South Shields Cricket Club

The South Shields Cricket Club serves as a model of how sports organisations can play a pivotal role in community development. Sported’s help has allowed them to flourish as a community-focused group, becoming a positive force in the lives of the young people – and the locale – they serve.

Sometimes a local sporting hub can push out the boundaries and bowl everyone over.

South Shields Cricket Club hit it for six, making a huge difference in their community and contributing to a sense of cohesion that is top of the order.

Physical activity is an asset that transforms places, big and small, across the UK.

But it needs help.

Securing funding for operations and improvements is a challenge. South Shields CC addresses this through local partnerships, sponsorships, and community fundraising efforts.

Support to do more allows them to keep hitting it out of the park.

“We know there are thousands of groups across the country doing great work every single day,” Tom Burstow of Sported underlines.

“We want to improve that, and we know there’s a variety of ways we can help government in a variety of different areas such as truancy, anti-social behaviour, crime and educational attainment, and as a sector we know we have a role to play in achieving much more.”

The club has also come to Sported for support with volunteers, ensuring they have effective coordination when implementing their skills, advice and time – as well as finding them in the first place. The club fosters a strong volunteer culture, ensuring that contributors feel valued and integral to its success.

But it truly is their work as a beacon for the community that they deliver most.

“We do over 25 hours a year free coaching in primary schools where over 50% of the kids are on free school meals,” highlights club chairman Patrick William-Powlett.

“(We do this) with the intention that they will come to the 38 days of free holiday camps that we put on.|

Recognising the importance of quality infrastructure, the club continuously works on improving its facilities.

Upgrading the clubhouse and grounds is a testament to its commitment to providing a facility of the standard required to support the community from the inside out.

The South Shields Cricket Club exemplifies how sports organisations can drive community development and cohesion with placed-based solutions.

By focusing on inclusivity, youth development, and continuous improvement, the club not only promotes cricket but also strengthens the social fabric of the South Shields community – and across Northeast England.
