Celebrating the Power of Sport on International Day of Sport for Development

By Sported |  6 April 2025

This Sunday marks the International Day for Sport for Development, an occasion that highlights the transformative impact of sport worldwide.

In 2025, the theme is ‘Social Inclusion’, focusing on breaking down stereotypes, promoting equal opportunities, and fostering inclusive participation for all. Sport serves as a unifying force, bridging divides, inspiring positive change, and tackling prejudices to build more equitable societies.

Supporting this is crucial because sport has the power to truly change lives – of all ages. It instils fundamental life skills, strengthens each one of our communities, and provides young people with positive pathways. It is a tool for addressing key social challenges, from reducing knife crime and anti-social behaviour to fostering community cohesion and resilience.

Beyond its role in personal development, sport significantly improves physical and mental wellbeing. It offers young people a sense of belonging, a purpose, and a safe space to grow. Local sports organisations in communities across the UK play a crucial role in addressing crime prevention, employability, and social inclusion, while also improving overall health outcomes.

We see it in the incredible work undertaken by the groups Sported supports. A teen at risk, nurtured by an inspirational role model. The young adult who doesn’t fill they “fit in” who finds the right place to grow and flourish. The streets made safer for the presence of activities that are affordable and inclusive to all.

Last month, speaking to the Culture, Media, and Sport select committee at Westminster, I emphasised the critical role of grassroots sports clubs and organisations. These groups provide essential services that support at-risk youth, helping them stay engaged in positive activities while fostering stronger communities.

Their impact cannot be overstated, as they offer guidance, mentorship, and opportunities that many young people might not otherwise access.

Ensuring that everyone has equal access to sport and its benefits is key. Unfortunately, many communities still face significant barriers to participation, whether due to financial constraints, lack of facilities, or social exclusion.

That’s why Sported launched its new partnership with the Westminster Foundation this week: to improve social inclusion in under-represented areas in rural Lancashire and the western Highlands. Regions like these are often overlooked by mainstream initiatives, yet they have enormous potential to benefit from community-driven sports programs.

Grassroots sports have a unique ability to inspire, engage, and uplift, thanks to the dedication of local heroes who work tirelessly to make a difference. Removing obstacles to participation is essential to guaranteeing that all of our communities can experience the benefits of sport.

While we celebrate sport for development on this one day, our commitment extends throughout the year. The mission is clear: to make sport an open door, ensuring that its power to transform lives is fully realised.
