In Cardiff, the Horn Development Association stands as a beacon of hope and unity, delivering a diverse array of community projects with a special focus on Black, Asian, and other minority ethnic communities. The association’s mission is clear: to harness the power of sport to break down barriers, facilitate open communication, and build trust between various authorities and the communities they serve.
However, like many grassroots organisations, the Horn Development Association faced significant challenges. They needed support in formulating plans to encourage more women and girls from ethnic minorities to participate in sports and physical activities. Additionally, they aimed to develop robust plans and network connections for the resourcing and successful delivery of a planned initiative called the Community Cohesion Cup.
Understanding the potential of the Horn Development Association to foster community cohesion and inclusion, Sported provided crucial support through a series of three short-term placements, each lasting up to six weeks. A number of volunteer consultants, each bringing unique expertise and perspectives, were assigned to assist the association.
The consultants worked closely with Mohamed Molibany, a trustee of the Horn Development Association, and other key members. They provided invaluable guidance in redeveloping the association’s business plan, helping to clearly define their goals and strategies. With this strengthened foundation, the association was better positioned to secure essential funding.
One of the most significant achievements was the successful acquisition of multiple grants, including £250,000 from The National Lottery Community Fund and additional support from the Barclays Community Football Fund, which was distributed through Sported. This financial boost was a game-changer, enabling the association to expand its programs and enhance its outreach efforts.
“I am very happy with your continuing support and standing shoulder to shoulder with us,” Molibany said.
The secured funding allowed the Horn Development Association to implement new initiatives aimed at increasing the participation of women and girls in sports. They launched tailored programmes that addressed cultural and social barriers, providing safe and welcoming environments for female participants. These initiatives not only promoted physical activity but also empowered women and girls, fostering confidence and a sense of community.
The ongoing support from Sported’s volunteer consultants was instrumental in navigating the complexities of funding applications and organisational development. Their expertise and dedication helped the Horn Development Association to not only secure vital resources but also to build a sustainable model for future growth and impact.
“I’ve witnessed first-hand the transformative impact of our Volunteer Consultant programme on Welsh community groups,” said Sported’s National Manager for Wales, Richard Thomas.
“Through the initiative, passionate volunteers bring their professional expertise to local organisations, helping them thrive and change the lives of young people. The Horn Development Association, with its commitment to community cohesion, stands out as a brilliant example of how sport, inclusion, and communication can break down barriers and build trust in one of Wales’ most ethnically diverse areas.”
The story of the Horn Development Association is a powerful testament to the transformative potential of community-focused initiatives, especially when supported by dedicated volunteers and strategic partnerships. Through their commitment to breaking down barriers and building bridges, the association has created a lasting positive impact on the lives of many within Cardiff’s ethnic minority communities.
